True State Assessments

Our project assessments provide objective, unbiased answers to the most important questions:

·         Can this project still  return more business value than it would cost to complete and maintain it

·         Can this project return more business value than the alternatives we have now

We review the client's currently available strategic investment options, including the project in question. We assess whether or not the project can still return more business value than the other available options.

We start by revisiting and revalidating the current technology business case. We look for obsolete or incorrect assumptions about business and technology drivers. We also look for underestimated or ignored costs and risks, and for overstated business benefits. Finally, we look for underestimated or ignored potential benefits that could compensate for other weaknesses.

We map the business case to business requirements, business requirements to functional requirements, and functional requirements to technical requirements. By identifying significant defects in any of these deliverables, or disconnects between deliverables, we can realistically evaluate risks and benefits.

We also review project risk factors that often get too little attention, such as

  • Team instability
  • Overlong schedules
  • Dependence on untried technology
  • Poor communications between developers, vendors, and stakeholders
  • Other potential red flags.

Our template-based approach leverages an extensive, continually updated repository of efficient, effective, adaptable and easy-to-use tools.  All are based on recognized, consistent, proven best practices.  This eliminates most of the redundant effort of preparing methods and tools that drives up the time and cost of other consulting approaches.

In the end, we deliver a report of findings and recommendations to continue, rescope, reschedule, or cancel the project. All recommendations are vendor neutral. This allows the client to choose any other qualified resource for follow on work.

Recovery and Control Services

Many clients have already decided to continue troubled projects. They often need help in getting them back on track and keeping them on track. For these projects, we provide template-based recovery and control services that emphasize independent project quality management.  Our recovery and control services include

  • Quality review of deliverables, including user requirements, functional specifications, technical specifications, code, and testing
  • Planning and management of quality gates
  • Recommendations for process improvements
  • Post-implementation reviews
  • Business process documentation updating, cleanup, and improvement
