Guiding Principles

Sextant

1. Practice what you preach

It makes no sense to preach process efficiency, effectiveness, and adaptability if you don't practice it in your own daily operations.

We keep our own business operations as lean as possible:

  • Minimal administrative functions
  • No high-rent offices
  • Low sales and marketing costs
  • No partner bonuses
  • No promotional merchandise
  • No advertising
  • No expensive packaging of deliverables
  • No redundancy in methods and tools

2. Know when to quit

It also makes no sense to keep studying a question after you have found all the answers you need. It makes even less sense to make a customer pay for it..

Beginning with re-assessment of the technology business case, every step in our assessment process includes an exit check. For example, if conclusive evidence shows that the technology business case has become obsolete, and cannot match the business case for an alternative investment, we stop.  To keep going does three very bad things:

  • It unnecessarily adds to the cost for consulting services
  • It continues the financial drain caused by a doomed project
  • If adds to the opportunity cost of not switching resources to a better investment

To ensure maximum value for our clients, we make sure to avoid all three.

3. Don't reinvent what already works

We can and do work with proprietary methodologies when appropriate. As a Template-Based Consultantcy, we can give our clients important value-added benefits by using proven, repeatable, consistent methods, and tools implemented with readily available software.

These benefits include:

  • Elimination of low-value duplication of similar methodologies
  • Credibility from long history
  • Low (or no) acquisition cost.
  • Wide base of experienced users.
  • Easy access to free updates and customizations by user community
  • Easy adaptability to specific types of projects and business needs
  • Portability within and across organizations
