Who – and WHY – We Are

Leadership

Hamilton Technology Management is a template-based business and technology consultancy located in Hamilton, New Jersey.  Headed by Robert Benjamin, Hamilton Technology Management performs independent assessment, recovery, and control services for major technology projects.  Rob brings over 30 years of technology advisory experience to this role.

During those 30 years, Rob found that non-technical executives lacked the objective, unbiased information resources to make effective technology decisions.  He understood that every major technology project becomes an interest group, with a built-in motivation to protect developer jobs, vendor revenue, and management egos.

Hamilton Technology Management counters this interest group mentality.  We level the playing field on behalf of non-technology executives who need to get past asymmetric information to the unvarnished truth.  We, our partners and our affiliates provide financial, audit, and governance executives with the critical information they need to make better decisions about technology investments.

Core Competencies

Our core competencies include:

  • Independent, unbiased IT project assessments
  • Independent quality management and risk management for IT projects
  • Business process analysis, assessment, and improvement
  • Business process documentation
  • Plain Language business writing, editing, and coaching for business process documentation

We take on only those assignments that call for our core competencies.  We refer other opportunities to trusted partners or assist clients in finding resources with the right capabilities to meet their needs.

What We Do That Is Different Enough To Matter

Services For the Underserved Executive

We use template-based methods and tools to provide the objective, unbiased information essential to corporate governance and technology investment oversight.
We offer our services to:

  • Senior Financial Executives, such as CFOs, Controllers, and Vice Presidents of Finance
  • Internal Audit or Internal Control Executives
  • Audit Committees
  • Business Sponsors

We can also serve IT executives who need independent verification and validation of the projects they are managing. Finding and fixing the most serious problems in a technology project before an internal or external governance audit finds them can save a project and even a professional career.

Template-based methods and tools

Template-based methods and tools are proven, consistent, reliable, and repeatable. They reduce or eliminate the time and cost to invent methods and tools for each engagement.  Over the past 20 years, we have created a repository of template-based methods and tools. We can efficiently and effectively adapt them to the needs of a specific client situation.  Reducing redundant upfront planning and selection of methods and tools enables us to get straight to the heart of the client's problem.

Exit Champions

We also act as independent "Exit Champions" – representing the interests of the overall organization, not the development team, the business sponsor, or vendors.  As Exit Champions, we focus on the business case for the investment – and nothing else.

Finally, we guarantee our integrity. We refuse to participate in any follow-on activity that could result from our findings and recommendations. By removing any financial self-interest from our work, we can guarantee that our opinions are objective and free of bias in favor of going forward.

True State Assessments

We assess all of the available deliverables in a project to determine how much trouble it is in, and whether or not it makes business sense to continue it.

We review the client's current technology investment options, including the project under review. We assess whether or not the project can still return more business value than the others.  We map the business case to business requirements, business requirements to functional requirements, and functional requirements to technical requirements. By identifying significant defects in any of these deliverables, or disconnects between deliverables, we can realistically evaluate risks and benefits.

We also review project risk factors, such as team instability, poor communications between developers, vendors, and stakeholders, and other potential red flags. In the end, we deliver a report of findings and recommendations to continue, rescope, reschedule, or cancel the project. All recommendations are vendor neutral, allowing the client to choose any other qualified resource for follow on work.

Recovery and Control Services

For clients who have already decided to continue a project, we provide recovery and control services that emphasize independent project quality management.  Our services include

  • Quality review of deliverables, including requirements, functional specifications, technical specifications, code, and testing
  • Planning and management of quality gates
  • Recommendations for process improvements
  • Post-implementation reviews
  • Business process documentation cleanup, updating, and improvement
